How can i make downloads on IRC?

Hi, i want to download some manga and somebody told me a good way its using IRC but i dont know wt its that or how can i download there. Im using Leopard and Mac os X 10.5.6 so please give me information about it but be specific please..... or give me a link who'll explain it all.
