How practical is the iPod Video?

It depends on your lifestyle and what you want. Take into account how much you'll be away from your computer/ TV and if you'll need to be watching videos in that setting. Also take into account that iPod doesn't have a removable battery, and if you wear it down enough without charging it, it might shut off altogether (I had that happen). Don't ever buy anything because it's popular...buy it based on what you really want, and if it fits your lifestyle. If you prefer to watch videos on your computer or TV and want an iPOD mostly for music, don't get the 30GB. You have to know, because it's only you who will be using it. I considered the 30GB but realized I only watch videos once and a while, when I'm at home and chilled out. But that's just me.
