In Magic The Gathering, if a creature with an attached equipment is exiled, does the equipment fall off?

If I have a creature with an attached equipment, and that creature is exiled from the game due to an instant or sorcery, does the equipment fall off and remain in play, or is it exiled along with the creature? I know if the creature is killed due to damage the equipment falls off and remains in play, but I don't know what happens if the creature is removed from the game.
