Was the Caron Butler for Kwame Brown trade actually a good one?

The Lakers had Caron Butler and traded him for Kwame Brown. But they used Kwame Brown to get Pau Gasol. But the Lakers went through 2 seasons of mediocrity and Kwame missing games. While Butler became an All-Star. But recently the Lakers used Kwame to get Gasol. So was this actually a good move? Even thought the Lakers struggled for 2 years or should they have just kept Butler all along?
