Why is the defeat of the spanish armada the first turning point in the history of north america?

It really wasn't, but it did speed the decline of Spanish power and the rise of British power and especially the rise of the Royal Navy. It was naval superiority that made England the strongest power in colonizing North America, and eventually led to the British Empire dominating the world.
